How to Create a QR Code in Canva

Canva's QR code tool works for basic needs. Here's how to use it — plus when you might want a dedicated QR generator instead.

Canva QR Code: Quick Steps

  1. Open Canva and create or open a design
  2. Click Apps in the left sidebar
  3. Search for "QR Code"
  4. Click the QR Code app by Canva
  5. Enter your URL and click Generate QR Code
  6. Drag to resize and position in your design

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Access the QR Code App

In your Canva design, look for the Apps panel on the left side. If you don't see it, click "More" at the bottom of the sidebar. Search for "QR Code" and select the one made by Canva (not third-party apps).

Step 2: Enter Your URL

Paste your full URL including https://. Canva only supports URL QR codes — you can't create vCards, WiFi codes, or other types directly.

Step 3: Customize (Limited)

Canva lets you change the QR code colors after generation. Click the QR code, then use the color picker. Be careful with low-contrast colors — they may not scan reliably.

Step 4: Download

Download your design as PNG or PDF. The QR code will be embedded in your design. You cannot download just the QR code separately in high resolution.

Canva QR Code Limitations

Canva's QR generator is convenient if you're already designing in Canva, but it has significant limitations:

  • URLs only — No vCards, WiFi, SMS, email, or other QR types
  • No analytics — Can't track scans, locations, or devices
  • Static only — Can't change the destination URL after printing
  • No SVG export — Can't get vector format for large prints
  • No logo embedding — Can't add your brand logo to the center
  • Basic colors — Limited customization, easy to break scannability

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Canva QR code generator really free?

Yes, Canva's QR code feature is free for all users, including those on the free plan.

Can I make a QR code for a business card in Canva?

You can add a URL QR code to a Canva business card design, but you can't create a vCard QR that saves contact info directly to phones. For that, you need a dedicated QR generator.

Why isn't my Canva QR code scanning?

Usually it's a contrast problem. If you changed the colors to match your design, the scanner may not be able to read it. Try using darker colors on a light background.
